  Muscular Tension
Refers to the amount of muscular tension around the mouth when creating vowel sounds. Tense and lax are used to describe muscular tension. Compare /i/ with the phoneme /I/ (as in bit). The two phonemes are both high front vowels and yet they sound different. We distinguish this difference by noting that the mouth is more tense when forming /i/ then with /I/. Thus /i/ is a tense vowel.
